This photo was used in a Seattlest Re:Take article. In that article I included part of a price list from 1910. Back then, the Seattle Times had trading price lists for major goods from cities around the US on the financial pages. They also featured a long list of prices for the Pike Place Market, often with the city, state or country of origin of the product in the name. Oddly they only recorded the most expensive price they could find, limiting its use as data.

In 2007 we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Pike Place Market. But this year is the centennial of the first of many battles to save the market.

The Pike Place Market was already extremely successful despite being only 3 years old in 1910. It was still mostly a stretch of covered tables, like flower row (the North Arcade) is today. There were also farmers selling from the back of their trucks along Pike Place. The Leland Hotel, which has sported the sign "Meet the Producers" for more than 100 years, predated the market and was slowly incorporated into it. The Sanitary Market building opened in 1910, just off frame to the right.

There have been many fights over the years to save the market. A lesser-known battle happened in 1910. The Seattle Times took credit for original creation of the market after investigative journalism revealed price gouging conducted by the middlemen who bought from farmers and sold to grocers. In 1910 another Seattle paper began running ads attacking Pike Place and saying another site must be found for the market. Councilman Thomas Revelle and developer Frank Goodwin tried to defend the Pike location and struggled to maintain the integrity of the growing Pike Place market area.

A compromise of sorts was reached, but really the Times faction won out. A new market was indeed created in 1910 at the former PSTL&P streetcar barn at 5th and Westlake . But over at Pike Place, the small Goodwin market structure was rebuilt all the way down to Western as the five-story Main Arcade Building . And the city funded construction of the North Arcade, an extension of the covered stalls to north of Virginia. The market took the shape we know today.

It wasn’t over, though. It took another two decades before Pike Place was victorious. The Westlake market moved a block. In 1928 it was renamed Times Square Public Market, under new ownership. By 1930 it was gone, done in by the Great Depression.

In the meantime, the neon sign and iconic clock were added to the Pike Place Market in 1927, cementing it as the image of Seattle.

Whenever you have finished writing an article, it’s important that you properly promote it so that readers can read it. But, this may not be as simple as it sounds. Even if your articles are just for backlink creation, the content has to be fresh and unique. If the quality of your content is high, you can get traffic resulting from referrals from your articles and also backlinks. This way, you are achieving multiple advantages.

Success does not normally happen overnight with article marketing. Don’t get discouraged if you don’t see immediate results. When you work hard, you will be rewarded.
